Recipes: Shake things up by serving shellfish - OCRegister

Image
In the mood for something new for dinner? Think about bypassing the butcher counter and opt for some shellfish instead. Shellfish cooks up quickly and its versatility is impressive. Although there are several choices, I'm sticking to three tasty varieties in the following recipes: scallops, shrimps, and mussels. My rule is to cook fresh shellfish on the day it is purchased, but when it comes to raw, shelled shrimp and scallops, I often buy them frozen, which allows for more use-time wiggle room. Buying and Prepping Shrimp: I often buy frozen head-off, peeled and deveined raw shrimp at the supermarket (it's stocked in the frozen food case, not the seafood display). Sealed in a 2-pound bag, the shrimp are IQF (individually quick frozen) so I can take out as many as I need and leave the rest in the freezer. The majority of shrimp sold in the marketplace are deep frozen and delivered frozen. Even those in the seafood display of "fresh" shrimp you see at the counter wer...

Major aquarium vendor to stop selling fish bowls — they drive fish mad - ZME Science

Image
A major French aquarium vendor has announced it will stop selling the "classic" round fish bowls because they are cruel, driving fish mad and killing them quickly. The history of keeping fish (either for food or as pets) goes back thousands of years. Oftentimes, fish are kept in tanks or ponds, but at some point, the fish bowl became pretty popular, at least for some species of fish. It's not clear when the fish bowl was invented, but according to legend, it was first created by Madame du Barry, mistress to King Louis XV in the 18th century. Whether or not this is true, fish bowls became widespread over the next couple of centuries, especially for Betta fish ( Betta splendens ) or goldfish ( Carassius auratus ). Proponents of these fish bowls claim that since these fish cover relatively small habitats, a fish bowl should do for them. But the evidence suggests otherwise. It's not just that there's ...

Archerfish recognize that insects they have never seen before are animals - Phys.org

Image
Credit: CC0 Public Domain Lurking beneath overhanging foliage, archerfish have one thing on their mind: taking a well-aimed pot-shot at the next insect that settles within range. Squirting a ballistic jet of water, these tenacious assassins precisely target their victims, ready to dine. "Object recognition is critical for animal survival," says Ronen Segev from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, explaining that distinguishing dinner from non-edible objects is an essential life skill. But how do archerfish differentiate a tasty treat from an unpalatable plant? "It's a complex task," says Segev, who was curious to find out which visual featu...

Hirschbach acquires John Christner Trucking - Commercial Carrier Journal

Image
In a move that will create a refrigerated carrier giant, Hirschbach Motor Lines ( CCJ Top 250, No. 61) is acquiring Sapulpa, Oklahoma-based refrigerated carrier John Christner Trucking (No. 115).     With combined revenues expected to exceed $1 billion annually, the reefer conglomerate will operate more than 3,000 trucks and 5,000 trailers, along with a $150 million 3PL operation.  Hirschbach owner and CEO Brad Pinchuk has high expectations for the union, saying "these two organizations should be united and fit together like two puzzle pieces." In addition to JCT's 800 trucks, Hirschbach will be able to offer its customers access to JCT's logistics operation. Putting the puzzle together unlocks coast-to-coast along the southern tier of the U.S. for Hirschbach – JCT's primary lanes – while Hirschbach's density is largely east of the Rockies.  JCT was born in 1986 by John ...
