LWF Commission Adopted a Notice of Intent to Modify Red Drum ... - Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

Image
The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) adopted a Notice of Intent (NOI) to change the red drum size limit from a 16-inch minimum size limit and a 27-inch maximum size limit to an 18-inch minimum size limit total length and a 24-inch maximum size limit total length. The red drum's daily take and possession limit will be reduced from five to three fish per day. Additionally,  the retention of any red drum above the maximum size limit of 24 inches total length and the retention of red drum by captain and crew on charter or head boats will be prohibited.  Charter guides and crew will still be allowed to engage in fishing on charter trips to demonstrate how to catch red drum, but will not be allowed to retain red drum towards any limit on the vessel. The proposed changes result from biological data that indicate the red drum stock is experiencing overfishing resulting in an escapement rate below the 30 percent minimum limit, leading to a declining bio

The 5 best fish tanks in 2023 - Insider

When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more. Fish tanks are living ecosystems that are beautiful to look at and rewarding to maintain. The hobby can be an expensive one, though, so it's important to understand the requirements of the fish species you're interested in before purchasing a bunch of equipment. Different fish have different needs for tanks, filters, and lights. For example, some fish are freshwater natives while others live in saltwater. There are also fish that prefer cold water to warm. In addition, different fish thrive in tanks of different sizes. If you are new to fishkeeping, it can be daunting to find the right products for an ideal fish tank habitat. To learn about the essential qualities of aquariums, fish tank filters, and lights, we spoke with four people who are experienced in aquascaping and fish care. With their advice in mind, we combed through the aquarium equipment available at major

Mote Marine's new laboratory near I-75 will feature the Gulf of ... - WUSF Public Media

Two massive windows that will allow visitors to see an under-the-water oceanscape hung high in the air above the 400,000-gallon tank where sea creatures will swim miles from any ocean. The juxtapositions are two of many at Mote Marine Laboratory's new $130 million science and education aquarium being built at Nathan Benderson Park along Interstate 75 in Sarasota County. When complete at the end of next year, the aquarium will be a three-story testament to creative design and engineering for hands-on learning by school children throughout the region as well as visitors from afar. In children's lingo, this place is gonna' be cool! The building will be part of a 12-acre facility encompassing both land and water, made for children and adults, and considered a milestone between the old and the new at Mote.

Unalaska readies to deploy traps for invasive European green crabs - Alaska Public Media News

Image
In much of the state, scientists have had their eyes on the crab for years. In communities around Kachemak Bay, they've been setting traps for about two decades. (Hope McKenney/KBBI) Unalaska is preparing to start monitoring for European green crabs. That's after the invasive species was first found in Alaska last July. The crabs could cause a big problem. They destroy habitat and outcompete native species. Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game say the monitoring program is crucial in the nation's largest fishing port. They're preparing to deploy traps later this summer. "We don't have any reason to believe that European green crab are here or established in the region, but we're also not currently doing any monitoring," said Ethan Nichols, the assistant area manager for shellfish with ADF&G in Dutch Harbor. "With European green crab steadily moving

Diversity of myxozoans (Cnidaria) infecting Neotropical fishes in ... - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Myxozoans are a unique group of microscopic parasites that infect mainly fishes. These extremely reduced cnidarians are highly diverse and globally distributed in freshwater and marine habitats. Myxozoan diversity dimension is unknown in Mexico, a territory of an extraordinary biological diversity. This study aimed to explore, for the first time, myxozoan parasite diversity from fishes of the Neotropical region of Mexico. We performed a large morphological and molecular screening using host tissues of 22 ornamental and food fish species captured from different localities of Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Myxozoan infections were detected in 90% of the fish species, 65% of them had 1 or 2 and 35% had 3 and up to 8 myxozoan species. Forty-one putative new species were identified using SSU rDNA phylogenetic analyses, belonging to two main lineages: polychaete-infecting (5 species) and oligochaete-infecting (36 species) myxozoans; from those we describe 4 new species: Myxidium zapo

New gallery at Tampa's Florida Aquarium focuses on weird ways ... - Tampa Bay Times

Image
TAMPA — A new gallery opening Saturday, July 1, at the Florida Aquarium is full of fish and animals that have developed strange adaptations or camouflage. That includes an electric catfish, a walking shark, four-eyed fish, bird poop frogs and an archer fish that literally spits a line of water like an arrow to knock food out of a tree branch above. Called MORPH'D, it is the first new gallery since the Tampa aquarium opened in 1995. And it is the first of three new galleries coming as part of a three-year, $40-million expansion. MORPH'D is the smallest of the three planned, featuring 18 unique species from around the world. Related: What's coming this summer at Tampa Bay's zoos, aquariums and children's museums Not only are the animals unique to the aquarium, it is the first time the aquarium has employed high-tech touch screens to create a more interactive exhibit. Scrolling through the screens reveals where the animal comes from and what they eat and how they have
