Welcome to the weekend, Michigan!

Each week our Michigan's Best team of Amy Sherman and John Gonzalez come up with a list of great things to do for our Michigan's Best Weekend Show, and share them with you here. It's time to get out there and embrace winter, both inside and out, and we've got plenty of ways you can do that right here.

You can view our show by going to Facebook.com/MLiveMIBest.

This weekend's show is brought to you by the The Muskegon Lumberjacks, who have a game this Saturday night. We have all the information below.

This is the last weekend to celebrate our January pick for Beer of the Month, Bell's Hopslam. Every month through 2020, we'll be sharing a Michigan beer with you via video, and you'll also be able to learn more about our beer selection through our post on MLive.com, which you can find here. Beer of the Month is fully selected by us, and brought to you by HopCat. Our beer pick will be available to taste and try at every HopCat in Michigan through the end of the month, or until supplies run out. We hope you'll join us on this beer exploration, and let us know what you think if you try it. We'll be announcing next month's selection on February 6.

Here are the events that we covered on this week's show, plus a few Michigan's Best picks that we've been craving lately.

Have an event that we missed? Feel free to add it to the comments.

You can always email us your events, or your suggestions for Michigan's Best.

The I-500 is one of the largest snowmobile races in the country and is happening this weekend in Sault Ste Marie.

Sault Ste Marie International 500 Snowmobile

984 W 4th Ave

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan 49783

(906) 635-1500

Running through the weekend is one of the most exciting races out there, ever. It's I-500, a crazy time up in the Soo. North America's only one mile banked oval ice ring is the site for the race, where dozens and dozens of snowmobiles will be barreling around at incredible speeds right on the ice. The excitement is contagious, if a little bit cold. There are time trials all week long, and the big race will start at 10:00 am on Saturday.

There's plenty of other activities to enjoy during race week as well. On Friday night, head to Kewadin Casino and Hotel to attend the Miss I-500 pageant, which is free and open to the public. They'll be crowning new royalty that night, and you can vote for your favorites young ladies by making a dollar donation in their jar, with all of the proceeds being donated directly to the Pink Ribbon Riders charity.

Most of the other events, including the race and the time trials, require a purchase of a race button for admittance, which you can find at various local businesses around town.

All the info, plus the schedule, can be found here.

Wally's in Kalamazoo makes some stellar subs.

John's Michigan's Best Pick:

Wally's Subs

Address: 6477 Stadium Dr., Kalamazoo, MI 49009

Phone: 269-375-0994

Online

It's old school at Wally's, and we loved it. Classic, cold subs, on bread with a great chew. Lots of meat and fresh toppings, and a house made dressing make for a solid, filling sub. You can order 1-meat, 2-meat or 3-meat subs, as well as specialty sandwiches and gyros. They have more than 60 sandwiches on the menu. The Italian, pictured, is a bomb of ham, pepperoni, salami, cheese, tomato, pickle, onion, lettuce, mayo, dressing and your choice of one of these: olive, hot peppers or mushrooms. Opened in 1983, this is a favorite of the Kalamazoo region. The employees were great, and you can play tabletop Ms. Pac Man while you wait. Not much better than that, right? See the complete online menu at http://www.wallysubsandwiches.com/menu.html.

The crew at Pure Country in Sault Ste Marie is ready to serve you.

Amy's Michigan's Best Pick:

Pure Country Family Restaurant

3400 I-75 Business Spur

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan 49783

906-259-7045

Facebook

We awarded Pure Country a special award during our search for Michigan's Best Diner, the Brotherly Love Award.

"Our family really likes to eat," Clegg family matriarch Sonja Clegg told us. That love of food translated into two of her sons being nominated for Michigan's Best diner in the Upper Peninsula poll. Pure Country Family Restaurant, owned by her son, Keith Clegg, and Big D's Diner in Pickford, owned by her son, Darryl Clegg, were neck-and-neck in the voting. "I had to keep voting for both places," she explained. "I tried to be fair."

Pure Country opened their Sault Ste Marie spot in 2015, and they have also run a location in Rudyard since 1993. While owned by Keith Clegg, he'll readily admit that his go-to person, Susie Walkiewicz, is one of the main reasons for his success. She's been working with Clegg for eight years now, and she laughingly told us, "I do all the work, and he gets all the perks." Everything is homemade here, right down to the freshly baked bread.

Check out the daily soup offerings, and the tender and flavorful sirloin lunch available on Thursdays. Breakfast is a bustling time, patrons line up to wait to enjoy huge portions. The Hillbilly Deluxe is a monstrosity, with flaky hand-made biscuits layered with hash browns, swiss cheese, flavorful sausage gravy and topped with two eggs. Try the Cowboy Killer Omelette, one of the most popular on the menu, that comes stuffed with your choice of meat, jalapenos, Swiss and American cheese, and covered with gravy. It's served with a side of stellar America fries that are laced with caramelized onion, crispy and delicious.

See all the pictures from our visit to Pure Country here.
