North Carolina governor orders entire state to stay at home

Order takes effect Monday at 5 p.m., but Cooper urges people to comply "sooner"

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper on Friday issued a stay-at-home order for the entire state.Cooper made the announcement as he and members of the coronavirus task force held a briefing on the COVID-19 status and response by the state.Watch the briefing above.The order goes into effect Monday at 5 p.m., but Cooper urged everyone to start staying at home "soon" as much as possible."It's what we have to do to save lives," Cooper said. "It has the force of law. This order directs you to stay home unless you have to leave for essentials, such as your job, food, medicine, outdoor exercise or to help someone.""North Carolina is now considered by the CDC to have wide spread transmission, meaning that some people who tested positive don't know how they got it," Cooper said. "They did not travel anywhere. They were not in contact with a known positive person, but now they find themselves sick with the virus."The order bans gatherings of more than 10 people and directs everyone to physically stay at least six feet apart from others."I know this order may lead to even more hardship and heartache. Although we are physically apart, we must take this step together in spirit," Cooper said. North Carolina has 763 positive COVID-19 cases in 60 of the state's 100 counties as of Friday morning. So far, 15,136 COVID-19 tests have been completed statewide.There are three reported COVID-19 deaths reported statewide, as of Friday morning.Restaurants are closed statewide for dine-in services but can still offer takeout and delivery. Cooper has over time expanded statewide movement and commerce restrictions, and extended the closings of K-12 public schools through May 15.
