A group of adorable penguins have been given guided tours of the aquarium where they live after it was closed by coronavirus.

The birds were allowed to have a look around the Sheed Aquarium in Chicago after it shuttered for two weeks on March 13 to try and prevent the spread of the killer disease.

Staff shared the first tour clip of crested penguin Wellington being given a tour of the facility's Amazon-themed area, with the little bird appearing enraptured by the sight of exotic fish swimming in a glass-fronted tank.

Sharing the expedition on the zoo's Facebook page, a spokesman wrote: 'Wellington seemed most interested in the fishes in Amazon Rising! The black-barred silver dollars also seemed interested in their unusual visitor.'

Wellington’s visit to Amazon Rising

Penguins in the Amazon?! 🐧🌴Some of the penguins went on a field trip to meet other animals at Shedd. Wellington seemed most interested in the fishes in Amazon Rising! The black-barred silver dollars also seemed interested in their unusual visitor.

A second clip showed bonded rockhopper penguins Edward and Annie enjoying the aquarium's rotunda, with the lovebirds seeming to be equally as fascinated by their fellow marine life as Wellington.

Edward and Annie were given the tour a week before they and other penguins at the zoo begin to build their nests, with zoo staff promising another appearance from Wellington before then.

The adventure continues! 🐧🐧This morning, Edward and Annie explored the rotunda. They are a bonded pair of rockhopper penguins, which means they are together for nesting season. Every spring is nesting season for the penguins here at Shedd, and this year is no different! Next week, penguins, including Edward and Annie, will begin to build their nests. You’re invited to digitally join us for the nesting coverage! In the meantime, we will share a variety of animal activities, and yes, Wellington will return! While this may be a strange time for us, these days are relatively normal for the penguins and other animals at Shedd. Our caregivers are constantly providing new activities, experiences, food and more to allow the animals to express natural behaviorsâ€"even if that includes simply exploring. Let us know what penguin activities you want to see! ðŸ'‡
