Terps Fall To Penn State In Extra Innings Battle, 3-2 - University of ... - UMTerps.com

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland lost 3-2 to Big Ten rival Penn State in an eight-inning nail-biter to open their weekend series at home. A close game throughout, 12 decisive strikeouts from Courtney Wyche were ultimately not enough against a well-matched Penn State team. With the loss, the Terps moved to 30-14 (6-9 BIG) while the Nittany Lions improved to 25-13 (6-9 BIG).

Wyche battled Penn State across 8.0 innings and 155 total pitches in the circle. Despite surrendering two lucky home runs, the senior pitcher stranded eight Nittany Lion runners and completed a one-two-three top of the sixth. Wyche finished with 12 strikeouts, her sixth double-digit strikeout game this season.

Jaeda McFarland headlined Maryland's offense, finishing with two runs, two doubles, and a stolen base. The Terps' other hits came from Trinity Schlotterbeck, Sammi Woods, and Megan Mikami.

Breaking Down The Action

  • Wyche started the game off strong for the Terps, spinning two strikeouts in the top of the first.
  • Maryland threatened in the bottom of the stanza, with walks by Kiley Goff and Mackense Greico, but they could not convert for a score.
  • With runners on in the second and third innings, Wyche came up big with back-to-back third-out strikeouts.
  • The Terps got on the board in the bottom of the third off an Amelia Lech sacrifice fly. After being hit by a pitch, stealing second, and advancing to third on a PSU error, Lech's pop-up allowed McFarland to touch home.
  • In the fourth inning, Wyche came out on top in a nine pitch battle, earning her eighth strikeout of the night. She ended up striking out back-to-back-to-back PSU batters.
  • Penn State took the lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run.
  • Maryland promptly answered in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at 2-2. Trinity Schlotterbeck slapped an RBI single to score McFarland, following the speedster's leadoff double to deep center field.
  • Wyche kept Maryland's momentum up with a three-up-three-down top of the sixth.
  • The Terps looked to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh, with McFarland doubling and then advancing off a Greico sacrifice. But Lech grounded into the third out, preventing McFarland from scoring.
  • Penn State went up 3-2 in the top of the eighth off a solo homer, Lexie Black's second home run of the day. Wyche got the Terps out of the inning without any further damage.
  • A two-out Taylor Liguori walk gave Maryland hope for an eighth inning walk-off, but Sammi Woods hit a liner straight into the PSU pitcher's glove for the final out of the game.
Numbers To Know
  • 18: McFarland recorded her seventeenth and eighteenth extra-base hits (and eleventh and twelfth doubles) of the season in this game.
  • 82: Swiped bags by McFarland and Kiley Goff bring the Terps to 82 stolen bases on the season, with an 80% success rate.
  • 150: Wyche upped her strikeout total to 150 on the season, putting her above last season's mark of 139 Ks. Her 150 strikeout total is among the top 30 pitchers in the country.
