Get up close with alligators, other scaly creatures in Portage - MLive.com

PORTAGE, MI — The time has come to be "Scalin' up for summer."

The free summer kickoff event, hosted by Portage Parks and Recreation, goes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, at Celery Flats Historical Area, 7335 Garden Lane.

At the event, attendees will get an up-close look at various types of scaly creatures, while also learning reptile facts. Attendees can even touch reptiles at the event.

Muxlow Exotics and the Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary will be present, as will Hawg Troughs. The latter of the three will bring a 2,000-gallon stocked mobile fish tank, a news release from the city states.

In addition, participants can explore the world of fishing and boating, learn about aquatic conservation, lure making, knot tying and more.

The first 100 kids will get a free fishing rod, courtesy of Veolia and the Future Angler Foundation.

Other vendors participating at the event include the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Trout Unlimited, Michigan Society of Herpetologists, Kalamazoo Book Arts Center, Kalamazoo County Water Safety and Recover Association, Barry-Calhoun-Kalamazoo Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area and the Portage District Library. Vendors are subject to change.
