Fishing Club helps to answer the question, What’s That Fish? - New Bern Sun Journal Posted: 20 Jul 2020 03:20 PM PDT Fairfield Harbour is uniquely situated with water that varies in color, salinity, and the fish that are caught. One of the common questions members of the Fishing Club hear is "What's that fish?" People either bring us a fish or send us a photo. They are often surprised to learn that there is an easily accessed website that makes fish identification quite easy. Its title is "What's That Fish?" The site features illustrations by Duane Raver, Jr., from his book "Fisherman's Guide: Fishes of the Southeastern United States." He kindly granted the club permission to use his artwork. Next to his illustrations, there are photographs of fish that were caught in and around Fairfield Harbour. The most common fish are red drum, speckled trout, and flounder, but there are certainly some odder catches. Art Thinguldstad caught the red drum in the picture west of Hampton Shoals at the mouth of Upper Broad Creek and Fairfield Harbour. At the other extreme a young boy caught a small spot from a dock in the Inner Harbour and, on the exotic side, Jeff Wertz caught a tarpon from another Inner Harbour dock. In all, there are a couple dozen different species shown on the Fishing Club's fish identification page. The website also has a leaderboard for this year's twelve- month contest for the largest red drum, speckled trout, or flounder caught in two categories: from shore or on a boat. Visit the site at fh-fc.com. |
