Aquarium of Niagara sets 40th birthday party for Sandy the seal - Buffalo News Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:06 AM PDT Sandy, a harbor seal at the Aquarium of Niagara, turns 40 years old this weekend. That's about twice the typical life span for a harbor seal, Aquarium officials said. Sandy is blind in her left eye because of cataracts. She underwent surgery to remove cataracts from her right eye at the Aquarium in 1987. She was the first harbor seal in the world to undergo such an operation successfully, the Aquarium said. Sandy was brought to Niagara Falls after being rescued as an abandoned pup in Washington State in 1980. She lives in the outdoor Rescue Harbor tank at the Aquarium, occasionally sunning herself on the deck. "Sandy's 40th birthday is truly a testament to the high level of care provided at the Aquarium of Niagara," Executive Director Gary K. Siddall said. The Aquarium will hold a birthday celebration Saturday and Sunday, with an ice cream cake at noon both days. Because of Covid-19 distancing rules, the Aquarium suggested buying advance tickets online. 0 comments Subscribe to our Daily Headlines newsletter. |
