Niagara Aquarium pet store

Military Road pet store Niagara Aquarium will close after 80 years in business.

Nearly 80 years ago, the late George Szabo opened Niagara Aquarium Pet Store out of the basement of his riverside home at the corner of Niagara Street and Royal Avenue. Next month, the business will close its doors.

Szabo's son John joined the business in 1988, which moved to Military Road in Kenmore in 1952. He runs it today with his three children.

The shop is a favorite among tropical fish keepers, but sells food and supplies for all kinds of pets. The elder Szabo was known for his own unusual pets that roamed the store over the years – pets that included a crow, a parrot and a skunk.

The store will hold a goodbye party from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, then close the last weekend of September.
