’Other’ pets that can make a house a home - The Advertiser

Covid-19 has led to a surge in Aussies wanting to become pet owners and there's plenty more to choose from than just cats and dogs. Julie O'Shea, founder of the hen rescue charity Who Gives a Cluck, says Covid-19 has led to a surge in inquiries from those wanting hens of their own with some looking for a new hobby and others after pets for their new rural abodes. The charity rescues hens from farms when they hit 18 months or so, a period at which they begin to lay less eggs. If they weren't rescued at this age they'd be culled (another word for euthanased). Instead, they're rescued by Julie and her team of volunteers. "I give every hen a thorough physical, plus the royal spa treatment consisting of a full body massage with lice mite treatment, tonic for internal worms, pedicure to remove those clumps of mud they can accumulate in big flocks, an ear nose and throat check and then finally, an essential oil mini massage of their comb and wattle.&qu

The main benefit of a larger tank is that it provides a more enriching environment for your fish,

My love of raw oysters began in 1988, when an 8-year-old me spent a warm summer evening on Cape Cod tipping back raw oysters with my dad on the back porch of a family friend's house. For years — well into my 20s — I had difficulty understanding why anyone would ever cook oysters when they were so clearly superior consumed raw. I first had my eyes opened when I worked at Uni, Ken Oringer's restaurant in Boston, then a sashimi bar, where he had us cook oysters over a coal-fired Japanese binchotan grill until they were just barely warmed through. They were finished with a kabayaki-style glaze (the soy and sake glaze you'd typically find brushed over grilled freshwater eel) enriched with butter. The low heat of the binchotan and the classic Japanese pairing of seafood with a sweet and savory sauce made for an experience that added flavor, while still allowing the delicate brininess of the oyster to shine through. Later, my appreciation of grilled oysters was c

One of the more drastic steps you can take in your college journey is getting a living, breathing companion to share your space with. I'd suggest holding off on getting a dog or a cat. One, they're not allowed in the dorms, and even once you move out you don't want to be scooping soiled kitty litter with a Sunday morning hangover in your small South O ap
