As Senate nears vote on algae fix, Donald Trump bashes Bill Nelson as ‘no help’ - Tampa Bay Times
President Donald Trump vowed on Tuesday to solve the months-long blue-green algae crisis that continues to plague Lake Okeechobee and the surrounding water ways.
In a tweet, Trump also said that Republican Gov. Rick Scott "has been relentless in securing the funding to fix the algae problem" and that Sen. Bill Nelson, a Democrat, "has been no help."
Scott, a top Trump ally, is challenging Nelson for his Senate seat. The ongoing algae crisis and reemergence of red tide have become a major flash point in a race that could determine which party controls the Senate.
The Senate is scheduled to vote no later than Thursday on the Water Resources Development Act. The bill includes authorization for a reservoir intended to decrease Lake Okeechobee discharges. As Treasure Coast Newspapers reported, this doesn't guarantee the federal government's share of the $1.6 billion project.
Nelson and Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican, have together urged the Senate to take up the bill. On Tuesday, Nelson said it was a good sign that the Senate was scheduling a vote but he added, "the state has to do more to improve environmental protections and reduce the amount of pollutants that flow into the lake in the first place."
Scott has contended that as one of two Florida senators, Nelson should have done more to secure federal money for projects that he said would have helped prevent future discharges.
Scott, however, has faced criticism from Florida environmentalists for years for not doing more to stop a main culprit: runoff from sugar farms. As governor, Scott reduced state monitoring of waterways and repealed a septic tank inspection law intended to help prevent major algae blooms.
