This house is in the Redwood Heights neighborhood, about 15 minutes by car from downtown Oakland and about 20 minutes from the heart of Berkeley. Some of the area's most popular hiking spots are nearby, including the Sequoia Bayview Trailhead, the beginning of a hiking trail that winds through Dr. Aurelia Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park; and a trail in Leona Heights Park that passes waterfalls and redwood trees as it climbs to a peak with sweeping city views.

The property is five minutes from East Bay Innovation Academy, a public charter high school; Holy Names University, a private Catholic university; Mills College; and Merritt Community College.

Size: 1,188 square feet

Price per square foot: $757

Indoors: Brick steps lead up to the covered porch, where the front door opens into a sunny foyer.

A few steps beyond is a bright living room with hardwood floors, a wood-burning fireplace and high, pitched ceilings. The hardwood floors continue into the dining room, which has large windows and a gold tone contemporary chandelier.

A door in the dining room leads to the kitchen, which was updated during a recent renovation with quartz counters, a center island, stainless-steel appliances and rattan pendant lights. A door on the far side of the room opens to a path that leads to the detached garage.

Two bedrooms are at the back of the house, off the central hallway. The primary bedroom has an accent wall papered in a blue-and-white medallion print, as well as direct access to the rear deck. The bedroom next door has two large windows and space for a double bed. They share a bathroom off the hallway that has a marble-topped vanity, a combined tub and shower and wallpaper in a graphic blue-and-white print.

The detached garage, currently used as a den, has three skylights and access to the deck.

Outdoor space: The deck extends the width of the house and the converted garage, creating plenty of room for outdoor lounging. Steps lead down to the terraced backyard, which is landscaped with mature trees and has room for a garden.

This house is a few blocks from Drake Park, a green space with a baseball diamond, volleyball courts and two lighted tennis courts. Nearby is Bembridge House, a Queen Anne Victorian house operated by the city of Long Beach as a museum. About a mile and a half away, on the waterfront, is the Aquarium of the Pacific, as well as the public Alamitos Beach, where the waves are gentle and the wide expanse of sand accommodates both sunbathing and beach volleyball.

Downtown Los Angeles is about 40 minutes away by car.

Size: 1,408 square feet

Price per square foot: $639

Indoors: This home's front porch is big enough to serve as an outdoor living and dining room, and includes recently added ceiling fans that keep things cool on warm days.

Inside, beyond the foyer, is a living room with original maple floors and built-in cabinets on either side of a tiled fireplace. Through a wide doorway flanked by columns is a dining room with a built-in window seat.

The recently updated kitchen is at the back of the house, with new cabinetry, space for a breakfast table and French doors that open to the backyard.

One of the home's three bedrooms is off the foyer, behind a set of pocket doors. It is currently used as a home office and has a built-in desk and cabinetry. Two more bedrooms, off a hallway that runs along this side of the house, have built-in storage and space for queen-size beds. All three bedrooms share a bathroom with a walk-in shower lined with blue tile.

Outdoor space: A small wood deck behind the house steps down to a brick patio big enough to hold a barbecue. The yard beyond is a blank canvas that could be turned into a space for gardening, play or both. The detached garage holds two cars, with parking for two more in the driveway.

Often referred to as a paradise for growers, Ojai is known for producing grapes used in the region's noted wines, as well as stone fruits, avocados, apples and lavender — many of which grow on this property.

The city center, with its dining and shopping, is about 10 minutes away. Closer still is a stretch of North Ventura Avenue with a drugstore, grocery store and gas station. Santa Barbara is about 40 minutes away, toward the coast; Bakersfield is a two-and-a-half-hour drive north.

Size: 1,360 square feet

Price per square foot: $662

Indoors: A rock wall separates the lush front yard from the street, and the path to the front entrance passes under a wooden arch covered with climbing roses.

The hand-carved front door opens directly into a living room with slate floors and wood-paneled ceilings. To the immediate left is a windowed dining area that looks out at some of the property's fruit trees.

On the other side of the dining room is a kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and a walk-in pantry. A powder room is off this space.

Beyond the kitchen is a family room with hardwood floors, a stone fireplace with a raised hearth and sliding glass doors that open to the backyard.

The three bedrooms are on the other side of the house; one is currently used as a home office. They share a bathroom off the hall that has a combined tub and shower.

Outdoor space: The patio off the family room has room for a table and chairs. A brick path winds through the yard beyond, leading to several other structures. One is used as a home office, and the others could become art studios or workout spaces. The property also includes a hot tub. The carport has one parking spot, and there is room for another car in the driveway.
