COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - A tiger at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo passed away on Friday following a fall involving anesthesia. On Tuesday, the zoo (CMZoo) shared a news release involving the incident that can be viewed at the bottom of this article. The zoo is reporting 2-year-old Amur tiger Mila needed dental care for a "severe" dental issue. There were concerns that if the dental issue was left untreated, it could have led to a fatal infection. When Mila received the anesthesia, she reportedly jumped on a bench and fell asleep. Less than a minute after falling asleep, Mila fell off the bench and died because of a spinal injury. "She could have slid off from that height a hundred times and landed in a variety of other positions and been unaffected," said Dr. Eric Klaphake, CMZoo head veterinarian. "The team quickly entered her den when it was safe and diligently tried for 40 minutes to give her life-saving care." You can read the full news release

The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, billed as the first project of its kind, seeks to remedy that by replicating those natural land-building processes by reconnecting the basin to the mighty river. The $2.9 billion effort to stave back coastal land loss began construction officially Thursday. Louisiana has lost more than 2,000 square miles of land since 1932, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The state experiences one of the highest rates of land loss in the world because of factors that include rising seas from climate change, land subsidence and sediment loss. The platform enables high level control of the microenvironment and direct observation of morphological changes. As a demonstration, temperature and salinity are chosen to represent critical abiotic parameters that are also threatened by climate change.
