Guppies are some of the most common beginner fish for aquarium enthusiasts. They are super low-maintenance, affordable, and found everywhere. Although they are low-maintenance fish, there is still a lot you should know about them. These fish need a lot of space and the right food to grow and thrive.

Guppies are native to South America and come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. They've been bred for over a century as pets and are great community fish when placed with other non-aggressive fish species.

If you've ever tried to search for information about guppies, you may have been left overwhelmed and with more questions than answers. Currently, there are about 300 guppy species in the family of Poeciliidae. Their feathery and colorful tails are eye-catching and some species are rarer than others.

1. Fancy Tail Guppies

Fancy tail guppies are one of the most common guppies in the world. They are also known as fan-tailed guppies or fantail guppies. These beautiful fish have wide and long tails. They are easy to take care of and come in all colors and patterns. It can be hard to tell fancy tail guppies apart from other species, however, fancy tail guppies have fan-like tails that are flowy.

2. Delta Tail Guppies

Delta tail guppies, unlike fancy tail guppies, have triangular or delta-shaped tails. They are sometimes also called triangle-tail guppies. Some of these fish have solid-colored tails, while others have interesting patterns.

3. Round Tail Guppies

Another guppy type with a unique tail feature is the round tail guppy. Round tail guppies are small fish with round tails. Their tails are shorter than the rest of their bodies. They are one of the first guppy species to be bred from the wild guppy.

4. Scarf Tail Guppies

The scarf tail guppy has colorful and vibrant rectangular tails with narrow edges compared to other types of guppies. The tail is also longer than other guppy species, sometimes about 8/10s of their body. Scarf-tail guppies are also referred to as flag-tail guppies. They are not as common as other guppy species, like the fancy tail guppy.

5. Mosaic Guppies

Mosaic guppies are beautiful and peaceful fish. They are great for beginners and come in all different colors. While every mosaic guppy is unique, all mosaic guppies have a striking, spotted, and flowy appearance with different shades of color. 6. Leopard Guppies

Like the big cats, leopard guppies have leopard patterns throughout their bodies. Leopard guppies have many tail types and come in all colors. One leopard guppy needs at least a 10-gallon tank to live comfortably.

7. Panda Guppies

Panda guppies are unique and beautiful. They aren't as common as other species and take years of careful and selective breeding. Panda guppies are dark blue and black with silvering color that acts as a striking contrast. However, female panda guppies are light orange or pink. They are also small, rarely growing past 2 inches long.

8. Koi Guppies

Koi guppies are colorful and resemble koi fish, however, they are small and typically reach 1 to 1.5 inches long. Most koi guppies have red faces, tails, and white bodies. Female koi guppies rarely have these vibrant features.

9. Neon Blue Guppies

Another beautiful type of guppy is the neon blue guppy. Like blue guppies, their bodies are blue. However, neon blue guppies are lighter and brighter. This variation is also called the Millions Fish.

10. White Guppies

White guppies are guppies with white coloring. However, they can also appear silvery. White guppies are milky and bred to not have secondary colors.

11. Solid Colored Guppies

Solid colored guppies are only one color. They can be blue, red, black, and yellow. While solid colored guppies only have one color on their bodies and fins, they can have different shades of the same color.

Albino guppies are one of the rarest types of guppies. They had bright red eyes, white or peach bodies, and reddish-orange tails. Albino guppies are also expensive, specifically female albino guppies because they are rare. One of the most popular albino guppy types is the full red albino guppy.

Glass guppies are unique because they are nearly completely see-through, like glass. They are small fish with short fins and tails. Glass guppies are interesting to watch, especially when pregnant as you can see baby guppies before they're born.
