Once we've all digested and/or slept off the annual Thanksgiving gorge, a great way to recuperate will be venturing out and enjoying these Black Friday weekend events in Columbia.

1. Black Friday,

Small Business Saturday

You know what's better than splurging on a few rare vinyls during the annual Record Store Day in April? Getting to do it twice.

Variety Record Shop on the square will have a huge assortment of exclusive vinyls throughout the day for Black Friday Record Store Day. There will also be live music at the shop, good food and atmosphere.

Live music will range from rock to hip-hop, with GalleryCat, Gr8frt and a "special guest" starting at 5 p.m.

Going to the record shop is always a fun way to relax, but when you have the chance to sift through so many rare items (while they last at least), catch up with friends about who had the craziest Thanksgiving, along with live music blaring out onto the downtown Columbia square, you can't lose.

I've heard there's a rare Sid Vicious live album coming out that day, which is at the top of my list of "must haves." But maybe I shouldn't have told you that.

If there's any money left over from Black Friday shopping, Small Business Saturday will be a great way to get those last few items on the list, while also giving back to Columbia's small businesses.

The Columbia Arts Building, 307 W. 11th St., will host Grateful for ARTS on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., where shoppers can browse several local artisan wares, which will all be set up on the building's third floor.

Franklin Aquarium Pet, 2409 Highland Ave., will also host a Small Business Saturday sale from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

2. Mustache

Madness

It's time to see what November has generated for the gentlemen who participated in this year's Movember.

Earlier this month, more than 20 local men faced the razor to raise awareness for men's health, myself included (I tried my best for the "Clark Gable," though I'm thinking bareknuckle boxer John L. Sullivan for next year). The event has helped raise thousands of dollars over the course of the month just in Columbia alone, and we're all celebrating with a big bash at Bad Idea Brewery this Saturday.

There will be hot dogs provided by Tallgrass Meat Co. cooked up by Hearty Hog food truck, live music and "mustache" cookies.

Doors will open at 10:30 a.m., with music starting at noon. The mustache contest will be at 2 p.m., with everything wrapping up by 3 p.m. Bad Idea is located in the Columbia Arts Building at 307 W. 11th St. in the Columbia Arts District.

3. Christmas starts in Columbia

Santa Claus will be out and about at many different locations this weekend, giving residents plenty of opportunities to get the photo, have a cookie and let the big guy know what the kids want for Christmas this year.

First and foremost, Columbia Police Department is hosting its annual Shop With a Cop pancake breakfast from 7-10 a.m. Saturday at Puckett's. Tickets are $5 and are available at CPD's headquarters on North Main St. from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, or at Puckett's the day of the event. This event raises so much money for underprivileged kids each year, and all you have to do is throw in a fiver while eating a plate of flapjacks with bacon.

Treasures Trash and Tiques, 2513 Keith Drive, will host Pictures with Santa this Saturday from 3-5 p.m. The shop will be having an open house to celebrate Small Business Saturday, but with the rosy-cheeked merry man of Christmas himself in tow.

On Sunday, Muletown Lumberyard will host Breakfast with Santa from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring the kids to sit on Santa's lap while enjoying free muffins and pastries. At 2 p.m., Muletown Lumberyard will host a Christmas cookie decorating party presented by Laura's Custom Cookies. Admission to the cookie decorating party is $45 and is recommended for ages 13 and up.

Also on Sunday, aMuse'um Children's Museum will host Cookies with Santa starting at 1:30 p.m. Only children require a ticket (limited to only 15), which are $20 for members, $25 for non-members.

4. Puckett's Holiday Village

Step into Christmas at Puckett's upstairs Guitar & Cadillac Hall this Sunday, as the restaurant host's "Holiday Village," which will feature lots of regional vendors and unique holiday gift items.

"We are excited to create a festive environment where families of Columbia can celebrate the season through art, craftsmanship and community," Kat Fort, Puckett's of Columbia's Event Sales Manager said. "Guitar & Cadillac Hall is an excellent space for this type of event, and we look forward to welcoming guests for this fun holiday outing."

Some of the event's vendors will include Sweetwater Jam, Creative Crayons Workshop and TriaHebs, Stucco's Jewelry. Santa will also be in attendance, with pictures available for $15. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children, and are available at www.eventbrite.com.

5. Live entertainment

With all the Black Friday and Christmas madness happening this weekend, there's still a lot of killer live music happening to help you wind down from the shopping and everything that's to come over the next four weeks.

◆ The Aaron Sizemore Band will satisfy your blues this Friday at Asgard Brewing Co. & Taproom, 104 E. 5th St., starting at 6 p.m. Beer and blues, is there a better combo? I also hear Rolling Recipe food truck will be on the premises.

◆ Will King will be at Asgard on Saturday starting at 6 p.m. along with Hearty Hog food truck, which you know is always the right choice.

◆ Rory Feek continues his "Extraordinary, Ordinary Evening with" shows at his farm at 4544 Highway 431 this Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. His concerts are always a great evening out full of stories, songs, and quite a lot of humor, though I'm curious as to what he has to say about recently opening Marcy Jo's Muletown earlier this month. Tickets are $50 and available at www.store.roryfeek.com.

◆ One of my favorite newer local groups, Yonder Grove, will be at Puckett's starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday. There is no cover charge, but be sure to call (629) 201-6919 to make reservations.

◆ Godspell will have its final performance at the Building Block School for The Arts, 1309 S. Main St., this Saturday starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and include dinner with the show. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 5:45 p.m.

◆ Vanh Dy's weekend of music includes music curator Rick Armentrout's The Unforgettables kicking things off Friday in the upstairs lounge at 5 p.m. On Saturday, world class drummer Sandy Gennaro will grace the upstairs speakeasy stage starting at 6 p.m. Downstairs, Chaz Privette will perform from 6-9 p.m. Friday.

◆ Dave Jennette Band will perform at The Boondox, 3543 Highway 431, starting at 8 p.m. Saturday.
