It's the weekend. And there's plenty to do whether you like penguins, shopping for handmade items or meeting celebrities like Neve Campbell and Tony Danza.

Parade time

The Penguins on Parade at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium in Highland Park is Saturday and Sunday, as long as the temperature stays under 45 degrees.

The annual tradition is as interesting to the birds as to the spectators: The birds are naturally curious and appreciate the opportunity to venture outside to see and hear new sights and sounds.

The zoo's newest penguin chick, Iggy, will lead the other penguins for their stroll outside of the aquarium.

The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's "The Nutcracker" opens Friday at the Benedum Center, Downtown. The ballet is set on Christmas Eve and begins at home at a party for extended family and friends. The protagonist is named either Claire or Marie, depending on the German or French literary sources for the story. She's a girl on the verge of being a young woman.

Among the guests are her uncle Drosselmeyer, who performs magic and brings gifts. His present for her is an animated Nutcracker. After everyone's gone to bed, there is a battle in the living room between toy soldiers and rodents, which is won by the Nutcracker.

The show gives back to local communities by teaming up with a local charity. This year, it is Girls on the Run, a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring girls to have the confidence to reach their full potential through curriculums that creatively integrate running.

The shows are a series of festivals that offer art, crafts and food. There are nearly 30 shows a year throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania and each one welcomes different vendors.
