| Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:13 AM PDT ![]() It's another day at Broadway Aquatics and owner Brain Sharp is midstream in his daily routine. One he's been familiar with since he was a kid. "I was a teenager," he recalls, "had a little ten gallon fish tank that I set up right in front of the window which you're not supposed to do the water turns green you couldn't even see the fish." That first fish tank turned into a job cleaning tanks for friends and 20 years ago Brian and wife Esmerelda bought the old Zoli's Restaurant on Broadway, opened their store and never looked back. It has not been easy, they deal in animals that need tending every day. 'Do you ever get a vacation?' "No," answers Esmerelda. "We might take like one or two days off but other than that there's always having to take care of the fish." There are certainly worse occupations, the Sharps are surrounded by beauty, perhaps the most beautiful creatures on earth. Business is steady, even when the economy tanks people need to care for their fish. And these exotic little animals, turns out, are pretty good company and very interested in what you're doing. 'There's an expression 'dumb as a fish'. Is that an unfair assessment of fish?' "I think fish are a lot smarter than you think.," says Esmerelda. "Well they know when you come in they know who feeds them they recognize you they know when feeding time is gonna happen." Broadway Aquatics sells everything fish...tanks, filter systems, the all important sunken battleship. But the fish are what keep the sharps going, delicate life forms wholly dependent on them. A huge responsibility the couple sometimes wish wasn't so huge. "We've been open 20 years," says Brian. "Almost getting time to say retire but maybe move into something else." May we suggest a long vacation first? Eric Olson reporting for 'Your Story Made Here'. |
| Posted: 09 Apr 2020 05:05 AM PDT ![]() EntertainmentJoe Exotic, one of the main subjects of Netflix's Tiger King crime doc, has not contracted the coronavirus after being quarantined following his transfer to a federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas. Exotic's husband, Dillon Passage, recently spoke with ET's Lauren Zima, and he gave an update on the former zookeeper's health and time in quarantine. "He does not have COVID-19 but at the previous facility he was at, there were multiple cases," Passage said, referring to the county jail where Exotic was incarcerated prior to his transfer. "So when he got moved, I think it was just like a safety precaution for this new facility in Fort Worth," he added. "To just keep him isolated just in case he did have it so he wasn't gonna pass it on to anybody else." As ET previously reported, Exotic was recently placed in quarantine at the federal prison in Fort Worth after fellow inmates at the county jail he was being held at tested positive for the coronavirus. During the 14-day quarantine, ET learned that Exotic is not able to make any telephone calls or check and send emails. Exotic was sentenced to 22 years in prison after being convicted on an array of charges, including two counts of murder-for-hire and 17 other wildlife violations. Many of the crimes in question were examined thoroughly in the recent Netflix documentary. From jail, Exotic also filed a $94 million lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior, as well as his one-time business partner, Jeff Lowe.
