More than 50 animals, including pythons, tarantulas and corn snakes, have been rescued from a fire.

Flames engulfed Hobby Fish, on the A5 near Potterspury, Northamptonshire, just before 04:00 BST, causing "large quantities of smoke".

Firefighters stopped the blaze spreading to the shop next door, Wrigglies, which sells reptiles.

Hobby Fish, which has been trading more than 40 years, said the blaze was "devastating".

The fire is believed to have started at the back of the shop, which sells tropical fish, aquarium plants and marine fish. Its neighbouring shop Wrigglies is owned and managed by another company.

Ashley Atkins, an aquatics assistant from Hobby Fish, said the fire crews were "absolutely fantastic" and responded "incredibly quickly".

She said they were waiting to see the extent of the damage to their fish rooms and for official reports on the cause of the fire.

Paul Greenwood, of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue, said: "Although part of the building has been severely damaged by fire, the incident could have been much worse if it hadn't have been for the effective tactics of the fire crews to stop the spread of the fire.

"The crews worked very hard under difficult circumstances and managed to rescue around 50 exotic animals including pythons, corn snakes and tarantulas, which were all at risk from the spread of fire and smoke."

Due to the smoke, residents have been asked to keep windows closed. The road has been closed between the A508 at Old Stratford and Potterspury.
