BOSTON — The New England Aquarium has launched two live web cameras, offering a glimpse at the dedicated animal care going on during its temporary public closure.

Visitors to neaq.org can now watch the residents of the Giant Ocean Tank and the African penguin colony from their personal devices 24 hours a day. The cameras are part of the Aquarium's ongoing commitment to offer virtual educational programming while its doors are closed.

The Giant Ocean Tank is a four-story habitat featuring a coral reef and about 1,000 Caribbean reef animals, including Myrtle and fellow sea turtles, stingrays, eels, and sharks. The 200,000-gallon exhibit is 23 feet deep and 40 feet in diameter.

The penguin colony, which surrounds the Giant Ocean Tank, is home to more than 70 charismatic Southern Rockhopper penguins and African penguins, where the live webcam is set up. All of the birds have names, with a small bracelet on their wings that helps the animal care team identify each one.

Online visitors can learn more about these habitats in the Frequently Asked Questions section of each webcam page.
