DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - People from all over the Midwest gathered at the Golden Leaf Center Sunday for a fish swap meet.

"This is a fish swap which means that aquarium vendors from all over the Midwest actually come with fish, dry goods, food, filters, pumps, some bring plants, and it's just a space where they can get together," organizer Jennifer Abel said.

Abel and others said they've been doing organizing swaps for six years

"This actually started in our garage at our house, so I guess our very first one was at our house, in our driveway and backyard and we had 200 people show up," Abel said, "Our very first swap was at the Knights of Columbus on 35th Street, we filled both floors and we were like 'oh we're not sure how big this is going to be' well, 450 people later, we outgrew that venue the first time."

For Des Moines Resident and vendor Amy Heinen, she finds the fair to be a good way to connect with others during the pandemic.

"This is how we've met some of our favorite people and the faces that we love to see, we walk around doing set up and everybody's hugs and smiles and ask about how your family is and your kids are it's been a great journey it really has." she said.

The event attracting people all across the midwest.

"People that drive all the way to Davenport, I mean from Iowa City, from Nebraska, Wisconsin, someone is here from Indiana," Abel said, "I mean our shows pre-COVID were 1,200 or so we're still getting that big crowd because we're the only ones doing this right now, they can't go to the Chicago stop, they can't go to the Nebraska one, we're the only ones."
