Readers reveal the 5 best places on Cape Cod for calamari - Cape Cod Times

If you are someone who enjoys calamari with your cocktails, we have some — actually five — places for you to check out on your next night out with friends.

We asked the 1,300 members of Good Stuff at Cape Cod Restaurants (our free Facebook group) for suggestions on where to go for calamari. And then we asked Cape Cod Times readers, in an unscientific poll, to come up with the top five.

Although it can be simmered in tomato sauce, calamari — the Italian word for squid — tends to be served deep-fried (calamari fritto) in New England. Those are the favorites we found in our poll results, too.

So here are five places to try golden-fried calamari:

1. Fishermen's View

Address: 20 Freezer Road, Sandwich

Contact: 508-591-0088, fishermensview.com

Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 p.m. Fridays through Sundays. (Sushi and other takeout available: 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.)

Of note: Fishermen's View, as the name suggests, offers a stunning 270-degree view of the Cape Cod Canal and Sandwich boat basin. You would have to work on a fishing boat to get something better. The restaurant's lounge, Sadie's, offers a wood-and-brass bar and patio tables.

 2. The Lobster Pot

Address: 321 Commercial St., Provincetown

Contact: 508-487-0842, ptownlobsterpot.com

Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily

Of note: In addition to its fried calamari, the Lobster Pot offers sauteed squid for a dollar more ($14) that is served with garlic butter, pesto and a touch of red pepper. Overlooking the bay, the Lobster Pot is a family-owned, laidback gem. Check out the menu that combines local seafood with a worldly influence. Lobster is served in all kinds of ways: arancini, egg rolls and ravioli.

3. The Lobster Trap

Address: 290 Shore Road, Bourne

Contact: 508-759-7600, lobstertrap.net. online ordering: toasttab.com

Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily

Of note: Dave Delancey's college summer job turned into a passion for him: He bought the place. He and his brother Dan ("Never trust a skinny chef")  pour their hearts and endless hours into serving top-notch seafood in a rustic riverside shack. The fried calamari ($14) is served with fried banana peppers, peanuts, bean sprouts and sweet chili sauce.

4. Scargo Cafe

Address: 799 Main St., Dennis

Contact: 508-385-8200; scargocafe.com

Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily

Of note: Scargo Cafe has 21 by-the-glass wines and more than a dozen specialty cocktails to enjoy with the "Rhode Island calamari" ($17). Traditionally an old-fashioned Cape Cod inn, appointed with beautiful period furniture, Scargo Inn also offers outside dining on a covered deck and in private greenhouses that hold four to six people.

5. The Dolphin Restaurant

Address: 3250 Main St., Barnstable

Contact: 508-362-6610; thedolphincapecod.com

Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily

Of note: Travel guides describe The Dolphin Restaurant as an "enduring hangout," but we would like to add "where everybody knows your name." There is an old-fashioned Cape Cod vibe. If you need a bigger table, staff will pull a couple together. There is a full bar with regulars. The Crispy Fried Calamari ($12)  is tossed with roasted peppers, herb vinaigrette, feta and kalamata olives.
