It's a new beginning for Red's Lobster Pot - Asbury Park Press

If you count Red's Lobster Pot as one of your favorite Shore spots, you may have noticed a few new faces around lately.

Longtime owners Martin "Red" Stillufsen, his wife, Louise, and their daughter Kitty have sold the Point Pleasant Beach seafood restaurant they opened together 20 years ago. Red's was purchased by Marisa Tanner and William Cleary, who until earlier this year owned Shipwreck Point in the borough. Cleary also owns Shipwreck Grill in Brielle.

"It has been an absolute joy to work there and to run it, and to work with local fishermen and local vendors and our wonderful customers" said Kitty, who, as do her parents, lives in Point Pleasant Beach. "And to work with my family, it's been a blessing."

The sale of Red's, brought on by the older Stillufsens' desire to retire, was finalized in late May.

"So far it has been great," Tanner said. "Great staff, great customers."

Old and new owners have been working together during the transition, and Kitty said Tanner and Cleary have kept the restaurant's name and staff.

"It seems like it's been a really seamless transition," Stillufsen said.

As for the menu, "we have added crab cakes, brought scallops back, pots of steamers back," Tanner said. "We have significantly improved the lobster roll, and I feel it is simply the best lobster roll in New Jersey!"

Red's Lobster Pot, 57 Inlet Drive, is open from noon to 9 p.m. daily. For more information, call 732-295-6622 or visit http://redslobster

Feeding frenzy

A parade of food trucks is set to roll into Stafford on Saturday, when the Jersey Shore Food Truck Showdown parks at Manahawkin Mart.

The showdown takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, then again at the same time July 26. Treat yourself to Puerto Rican favorites from El Lechon de Negron, bacon-centric dishes from Bacon on Wheels, Belgian waffles from Waffle de Lys, hot dogs from Callahan's, and plenty more.

"Visitors will find over a dozen gourmet food trucks each session to choose from, including some of the repeat winners from our very popular Monmouth Park Food Truck Showdowns," event promoter Patti Baxter said.

"There will also be plenty of crafters and Manahawkin Mart vendors to shop and browse, a chance to win a four-pack of tickets to a next season New Jersey Devils game or a weekend at FantaSea Resort in Atlantic City."

Manahawkin Mart is at 657 East Bay Ave. in the Manahawkin section of Stafford. For more information, call 732-747-4449.

Love that lobster?

Sweet, succulent lobster makes for a perfect summer dinner, and Restaurant Nicholas is kicking that notion up a notch with a meal that's as fresh as fresh gets.

On July 23, Chef Nicholas Harary will prepare a five-course meal highlighting Nova Scotia lobsters the restaurant says will have come out of the ocean less than 24 hours before.

The one-night-only menu includes a lobster roll, lobster bake, bouillabaisse, macaroni and cheese, and the simply delicious lobster tail.

The cost of the dinner, which begins at 7 p.m., is $135 or $185 with wine pairings. For more information or to reserve a seat, call 732-345-9977. Restaurant Nicholas is at 160 Route 35 south in Middletown.

Continuing the celebration

Because the first Continuing the Celebration Week in downtown Freehold was so successful last year — plans have been made to host it again this year.

Foodies and strollers will love the Flavor of Freehold, which returns from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. July 8 and 9. Visitors may sample a variety of foods, and get to know service providers and retailers.

Participants include San Marzano, Alycia's Bistro, Court Jester, Metropolitan Cafe, American Hotel, Cafe 360, Freehold Jewelers, Ginger, A Little Bit of Cuba Dos, El Meson, Investors Bank, Especially For You Florist & Gift Shop, and Solo Trattoria.

Tickets may be purchased at the Downtown Freehold office, 10 E. Main St., Suite 4A. Purchases before July 8 will receive a $10 gift card to some of the participating businesses.

A limited number of tickets are available for this event.

Also on July 9, "Idol" fans will enjoy watching — and hearing — singers compete in Freehold Idol in three age groups. This event starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Hall of Records.

Party band Johnny Drama will entertain the audience from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 10 in front of the Hall of Records.

The celebration officially winds up from 9 to 11 p.m. July 11 with the Red, White & Brew Crawl at the American Hotel, Court Jester, Federici's and Metropolitan Cafe. For $20, you will get the option of one glass of wine, one beer or one margarita at each location. Call 732-333-0094 for ticket information on this event.
