As an unforgettable sporting adventure, there's nothing quite like deep-sea fishing.

Jeff LaBerge says that finding the world's biggest fish — a dorado or a marlin perhaps, or a huge tuna — often starts by finding deep, dark blue open ocean with structure below. It can be done on a private boat, a sport boat or with a private charter. Either way, it's recreation at its finest.

Usually, the only thing someone deep-sea fishing can see is the vast ocean around them. And Jeff LaBerge of San Diego says that great deep dives can't just be found anywhere.

Queensland, Australia

Australia's iconic Great Barrier Reef has long been a top spot for deep-sea fishing, especially when black marlins are the goal.

Jeff LaBerge of San Diego says that charter trips regularly head out to spots near Port Douglas and Cairns, but the coastline is vast, and the large fish are found in abundance, including mahi mahi, Pacific yellowfin tunas, and giant trevally. The area also hosts several competitions throughout the year, including the Karumba Anglers Classic in late June.

Islamorada, Florida

Florida is a popular deep sea fishing spot in the United States, with the Florida Keys considered the fishing world capital. Jeff LaBerge of San Diego says that between Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Islamorada is home to a variety of fish species, especially the yellowtail and grouper in the late fall.

A popular spot in the Keys is the Marathon Hump, which boasts calm seas and scores of blackfin tuna, wahoo, and sailfish from May through August. But it's during the winter when the fish begin to travel far offshore and that's prime time for fishing from Key West to Key Largo says Jeff LaBerge of San Diego.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

Jeff LaBerge reports that the barrier islands off North Carolina have long been a popular destination for a low-key beach weekend. Those trips often include fishing activities, especially during blue marlin season in June and sailfish and white marlin season through August and September.

Charters are common in areas such as Duck, Southern Shores, and Corolla, many geared toward beginners. The spring, as the Gulf Stream's waters start to warm, is another great time to visit the Outer Banks to find everything from bluefish and yellowfin tuna to Spanish mackerel.

Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, Canada

Jeff LaBerge says that it may not be considered among the most inviting climates in the world, but Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia is an increasingly popular area for huge fishing finds, including some weighing over 1,000 pounds.

This is the area of the world where the chances of landing a huge BFT are the highest. Visiting from August through October is a safe bet for great oceanic fishing action within an area renowned for its centuries-old deep-sea fishing industry. And in picturesque Prince Edward Island, June and July are prime times for exciting tuna charters. Remember, this is a catch and release fishery, allowing these giants to reproduce for years to come.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo may be better known as a spring break destination for college students, but it's a fantastic place to find striped marlin, dorado, sailfish, and much more.

The best part? Its locations are fruitful year-round and it's comparatively inexpensive, especially when boats are chartered from the United States. For those looking to score big, October and November are great months for marlin fishing and from May to July, it's easy to reel in wahoo and sails.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Jeff LaBerge of San Diego says that warmer waters are more commonly associated with deep sea fishing, but the cold waters of the deep Atlantic off Massachusetts are famous for striped bass, BFT, and bluefish. Off of Cape Cod, adventurers can book trips lasting for 2 to 16 hours at least.

And of course, locals and visitors alike target the area's namesake, codfish, available throughout the year. May through November are the best times to go for a big trophy off the Cape.

Malindi, Kenya

The central coast of Kenya is where deep sea fishing fantasy becomes reality. It's not rare to land multiple species in just one day, including numerous species of marlin, swordfish, and sailfish.

Jeff LaBerge of San Diego reports that offshore charters are easy to find (several hotels in the area offer them) and the months of January and February are perfect times to land a huge billfish catch.
