Syracuse’s sunrise Easter Mass will continue after all at Burnet Park - syracuse.com

Syracuse's sunrise Easter Mass will continue, after all.

Last week, Rev. Jim Mathews at Saint Lucy's Church announced he planned to stop hosting the sunrise service on Easter morning after 36 years. This week, All Saints Catholic Church in Syracuse worked with St. Lucy's to carry on the tradition.

Rev. Fred Daley from All Saints will host the Mass in place of Mathews. The church will continue to welcome anyone and everyone to watch the sunrise and celebrate on Easter morning at the parking lot atop Burnet Park.

"The community is so thankful to St. Lucy's and Father Jim Mathews for doing this for the last 36 years," said Daley.

Other than the officiant, there won't be any major changes. All are welcome for the Catholic liturgy and there will still be music and a loud speaker system at the service. The two parishes (St. Lucy's and All Saints) will work together to organize the event.

Daley is hoping for a sunny, peaceful morning, but said he is prepared to continue the service in whatever weather Syracuse wakes up to. Be sure to bring your own chairs and blankets if you decide to attend.

Nearly 600 people attend the Mass every year and All Saints hopes to continue the tradition for years to come.

"It's such a wonderful way to begin Easter Sunday in our community," said Daley.

The Easter Sunday service will take place on Sunday April 9 at 6:33 a.m. near the upper parking lot at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.
