Boboo, the Phoenix Zoo's 8-year-old male African lion, dies - The Arizona Republic

The Phoenix Zoo's sole adult male lion and the father of newly born cubs has died. The 8-year-old African lion, Boboo (pronounced Bah-boo), was humanely euthanized Friday morning after the zoo's veterinary team found an aggressive form of cancer affecting his kidneys and spleen, according to a statement from the organization. "He was well loved by his keepers, Zoo staff, and guests, and the Zoo will certainly be quieter without his roars and calls," read the Facebook post. Part of the Species Survival Plan, a breeding and transfer program that is part of the nonprofit Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Boboo recently sired 6-year-old Phoenix Zoo lioness Zuri's' two cubs. Born June 3, the cubs are the first born at the zoo since 1976. Their sexes have not yet been determined as they bond with Zuri in their den, according to zoo spokeswoman Linda Hardwick. "This has been a time of immense sadness, but also great joy as Zuri and her two cubs are doing very w

The inside scoop on how to dig for clams in Maine - Bangor Daily News

Image
This story was originally published in August 2018. At low tide, the waves retreat, revealing the clam flats scattered along the Maine coast. And like clockwork, the diggers emerge. With a pail in one hand and a rake in the other, they roam the sand, searching for tiny clam-made holes in the ground that show them where to dig. In Maine, clam digging has long been a piece of coastal culture, and in many towns, visitors are welcome to give it a try. All you need is a little insider knowledge and in most places a low-cost license. Getting started If you're new to clam digging, the first thing you do is contact the municipal office of the city or town where you want to dig. In Maine, towns manage clam flats in cooperation with the Maine Department of Marine Resources, meaning that the rules and fees in each town are different. For example, Georgetown offers a seven-day recreational clamming license for $25, while up the coast in Searsport, the

The owners of Bayley's Lobster Pound and two other restaurants in Pine Point, a coastal neighborhood of Scarborough, have bought a fishermen's buying station and a connected restaurant. Susan Bayley Clough and Vincent Clough bought the Pine Point Fisherman's Co-op and Rising Tide restaurant, at 96 King St., from Gary Johnson and Tim Staples, in a deal that closed in April. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Cloughs own Bayley's Lobster Pound fish market and a connected restaurant, the Bait Shed, as well as Garage BBQ, which is connected to the Dog Days of Pine Point gift shop. The operations are within half a mile of each other. Bizarre Sex Helped Anglerfish Diversify and Dominate the Deep Sea, Study Suggests - Smithsonian Magazine

Bufoceratias wedli , a deep-sea anglerfish Masaki Miya et al. via Wikimedia Commons under CC BY 2.0 The ocean's lightless zone begins some 1,000 feet below the surface, and in some places, it extends more than seven miles deep. Dark, vast and empty, it's a difficult place to find a mate. But anglerfish—known for their agape mouths, fishing pole-like lures that extend from their foreheads and horror-movie blank stares—seem to have found a unique solution: hold their mates close, and never let them go. More specifically, some anglerfish engage in sexual parasitism. Certain males—which have smaller bodies measuring just inches long—attach themselves with their teeth to the bellies of females, which are larger and can grow up to three feet long. After mating, the males remain affixed there permanently. Other anglerfish engage in obligate p

Red Lobster seeks bankruptcy protection days after closing dozens of restaurants - KKTV

Image
(AP) - Red Lobster, the casual dining chain that brought seafood to the masses with inventions like popcorn shrimp and "endless" seafood deals, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The 56-year-old chain made the filing late Sunday, days after shuttering dozens of restaurants. "This restructuring is the best path forward for Red Lobster. It allows us to address several financial and operational challenges and emerge stronger and re-focused on our growth," CEO Jonathan Tibus said. Tibus, a corporate restructuring expert, took the top post at the chain in March. Red Lobster said its 600 restaurants would continue to operate through the bankruptcy proceedings, which are intended to simplify operations, close locations and pursue a sale. As part of the filing, Red Lobster entered into a so-called "stalking horse" agreement, meaning it plans to sell its business to an entity formed and controlled by its lenders. According to court filings, Red Lobster

A 2 °C difference affecting the spatiotemporal distribution of small demersal fish assemblages in shallow tropical and ... - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Two OR3 research vessel cruises were conducted at seven nearshore sites from north to south in the western coastal waters off Taiwan in May (late spring) and November (late autumn) 2019 in order to gain insights into the 2 °C difference in the tropical-subtropical fish fauna. Totally, 37 families, 72 genera, and 99 taxas were recorded for the 1809 fishes. Three fish assemblages, the North, South, and Fall-Zhuoshui River (ZRf) groups, were identified as eurythermal, stenothermal, and croaker communities. Their dominants, in rank order, were Tarphops oligolepis , Liachirus melanospilosa , Ostorhinchus fasciatus , and Trachinocephalus myops for the Northern eurythermal group, Arnoglossus tenuis , Eubleekeria splendens , and Ostorhinchus pleuron for the Southern stenothermal group, and Johnius taiwanensis , Chrysochir aureus , and Pennahia macrocephalus for the croaker-ZRf group. Their distribution was markedly correlated with the bottom water temperature, seafloor g
