New red drum fishing regulations go into effect June 20 - KPLC

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Starting June 20, 2024, new regulations for Red Drum fishing will be enforced in Louisiana:

  • Daily Creel: 4-fish daily limit per angler.
  • Size Limit: 18-inch minimum and 27-inch maximum total length.
  • Bull Reds: Keeping Red Drum over 27 inches is prohibited.
  • Charter Rules: Captains and crew on charter trips cannot retain Red Drum.

These changes follow a state stock assessment showing the Red Drum stock is not overfished but is experiencing overfishing, necessitating management changes.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) aims for a 35% reduction in yield to rebuild the stock above the target Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) by 2050.

Charter captains and crew will still be allowed to engage in fishing on charter trips to demonstrate how to catch red drum, but will not be allowed to retain red drum towards any limit on the vessel.
