I'm sitting in an auditorium in Andover as I write this on my phone. My neck is in my inflatable traction device, and we're heading into the final hour. Amelia and her Rise family have been competing all weekend, and have been doing great. It's bittersweet certainly, as this is the last dance season for many of these girls and us dance moms. It's guaranteed time with our girls and with each other. Now we'll just have to travel together to some tropical destination to relax. Well, the moms. The girls will be scattered around colleges, jobs, or travels of their own.

Happy birthday to Rebecca Mayhew and my dear cousin, Kathy King, on Feb. 9, Kristen Jenkinson on Feb. 12, and our favorite dance studio owner, Jil Matrisciano, on Feb. 15.

The Edgartown School seventh grade enjoyed their annual ski trip to Gunstock last week. No matter what happens, they always seem to have a good time on that trip. I don't yet know how the weather impacted their skiing, but I did see an assortment of tubing pictures on the school website, and that's always a good time. Unfortunately, I did hear that the weather did keep them from getting home on Friday. No boats Friday afternoon and evening meant another night off for the kids. Life on an island is always a new adventure.

The M.V. Mediation Program is offering a conflict resolution course at the Edgartown library. This course begins on March 7 and continues on March 14, 21, and 28, from 11:30 until 1:30. The Martha's Vineyard Vegan Society is back at the Edgartown library with its monthly

free food distribution and an informative talk on how to eat a healthy, plant-based diet on Feb. 21 from noon until 2 pm. One bag per adult, while supplies last.

Hop on a refuge prowl this Saturday, Feb. 15, from 12 pm until 2 pm, in search of the finally arrived snowy owl(s). The students and staff of MVRHS Performing Arts Department are proud to present the musical "Big Fish." "Big Fish" is a musical with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by John August. It is based on Daniel Wallace's 1998 novel, "Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions," and the 2003 film "Big Fish," written by John August and directed by Tim Burton. The show runs at the PAC from Feb. 13 through Sunday, Feb. 16. The evening performances are at 7 pm, while the Sunday show is a matinee at 2 pm. 

The M.V. Ballroom Dancers will be coming to you as dance ambassadors once a month on Sundays, with a different class at each library. This Sunday, Feb. 16, Sergio Racig and Esther Deming will be at the Edgartown library from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm for an adults-only salsa class. All levels of dance experience are welcome, and no partner is necessary. 

Well, I guess that about does it. I'm home now after a long dance weekend. I snuck in a chiropractor appointment on Monday to try and help this old back of mine. I'm standing up a wee bit straighter these days, which is nice. Driving and sitting through a weekend of dancing didn't do me any favors, that's for sure. The bright side? The girls did great this weekend. The danced their hearts out, and were rewarded with high scores and medals. Their local showcase will be in March at the PAC, which is the only opportunity to see the competition pieces on the Island.
