EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey SEA LIFE Aquarium at the East Rutherford, N.J., American Dream complex announced its opening date in April after it reached a new construction milestone on Tuesday with the filling of its water tanks with nearly 250,000 gallons of water.

The massive aquarium 25,000-square-foot aquarium will officially open to the public on April 23. According to Merlin Entertainments Limited, it will be themed around New York City's most iconic monuments and landmarks, dubbed "City Under the Sea."

With the water filling comes the first look of the theming in the grand ocean tank, which features a 13-foot-tall replica of the Empire "Skate" Building, the famous Manhattan hotel, the "Whaledorf" Astoria and more iconic buildings. The largest tank will be home to various species of sharks and more exciting sea creatures.

"The water fill is an exciting milestone for us because it takes us one step closer to opening day and gives a sneak peek into this one-of-a-kind SEA LIFE location with its 'City Under the Sea' theming," said DePascale. "We can't wait to entertain and educate our guests about the ocean, its inhabitants and future preservation."

ABOUT THE AQUARIUM

SEA LIFE guests begin their adventure in the "Rush Hour of the Ocean" platform with subway-style adverts and swarming yellow eels, reminiscent of NYC taxi cabs. From there, the journey progresses into the "City's Freshwater," where visitors can engage with the indigenous fish from the Hudson River, and into the colorful "Urban Jungle," where naturalistic flora and New York deco architecture intertwine among a variety of creatures.

"Sharks Fish Avenue" will showcase an imaginative display of storefront windows as the voyage continues through the underwater tunnel centerpiece with panoramic views of Manhattan landmarks, such as the Chrysler Building and Times Square, which will be set amid schools of tropical fish, sharks, rays and more.

Through more than 12 interactive exhibits, visitors will experience the creates of the rock pool that are the "Athletes of the Shores," the seahorses that are the "Ballet Dancers of the Ocean," the piranhas that are the "Wall Street Wolves" and the jellyfish that are the "Disco DJs of the Deep."

The attraction will also offer talks and events, feeding demonstrations and more.
