A national pet supply store franchise has opened its first Sarasota location near Interstate 75. Pet Supplies Plus, a pet goods and services retailer with more than 450 locations across the U.S., has opened a store at 5380 Fruitville Road in Sarasota. The franchise owner is Tom Dammer, a Michigan native who moved to Sarasota a year ago. Dammer and his wife were frequent shoppers at Pet Supplies Plus when they lived in Michigan, and they loved it so much that they decided to open one of their own. "Our 'minus the hassle' tagline refers to making shopping for your pet an enjoyable, easy experience. For example, we don't want you lugging your food out to your car – that's our job. If you want to wash your dog, come on in. We'll deal with the mess that's tied to a bathing session," Dammer said. The store sells natural pet foods, goods and pet services with a focus on the in-store experience. Team members are well-versed on natural and holistic foods and can answer a broad range of questions on dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and fish. Full-service grooming and self-service dog washes are available. And, of course, dogs are always welcome. The store is in a Fruitville Road plaza owned by Benderson Development Co. of Manatee County, next to Target. Also coming soon to the plaza is a Sports Clips men's hair salon, according to permit applications filed with Sarasota County. Other tenants include Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt and Humble Donuts and Dollar Tree. Grand opening celebrations at Pet Supplies Plus are scheduled to begin Saturday. Complimentary nail trims and dog washes will be available Saturday and Sunday, and customers will have a shot at a one-year supply of dog or cat food over the weekend. There will also be an adoption event with Underdog Rescue on Saturday. Pet Supplies Plus is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
