Lake of Memories – Wrightsville Beach Magazine - Wrightsville Beach Magazine

When I was a boy, nothing was as exciting as planning a trip to Greenfield Lake, and then gathering what little gear was mine to use. It was very little indeed! First there was the rod, which was nothing more than a cane pole trimmed in braided line, as there was no monofilament at that time. Such a benefit would take a few more years before introduction.     I used only a Carolina Float cork, which was almost almond shaped rather than a typical round bobber. The cork sat in the water like a perpendicular pencil, and it was typically half submerged if lead weight and attached bait were balanced correctly. Only a long-shank #8 Carlisle hook was used because it would bend straight if I would hang up with a nonforgiving snag. That, of course, I did with great regularity. Next came the bait procurement tool, which was an old U.S. Army folding backpack infantry shovel. I loved it, as it was possibly used in the war, and the blade folded into the handle. Neat! ‘Snakehead’ Review: Nightmares on the Way to the American Dream - The New York Times

Image
The writer and director Evan Jackson Leong sets a crime tale in New York City's Chinatown. "Snakehead" is an unvarnished look at the seedy intersections between organized crime and human trafficking in present-day New York City's Chinatown. In his welcome but oversimplified addition to the American crime family saga, the writer-director Evan Jackson Leong carves out unapologetic space for a villainous family with a strong bond. Telling the story through an intra-diasporic gaze, Leong positions the Chinese American kingpin Dai Mah (Jade Wu) and her sons against Sister Tse (Shuya Chang), a Chinese national who owes Dai Mah nearly $60,000 for smuggling her into the United States and is willing to become a human trafficker herself to clear the debt. The movie wants to be both an insider look at the global apparatus of human trafficking, including its tragic costs, and a redemptive tale about the women at the center of this criminal underworld. Leong is more successful at

Goldfish Plant Care 101 - Bob Vila

istockphoto.com There are plenty of goldfish plants in the sea, er, market. The two related genus types that most often go by that name both are epiphytic vines, meaning they grow on trees in their native habitat. The curving blooms of Columnea usually resemble leaping fish when viewed from the side, while the pouch-like flowers of Nematanthus simulate plump swimming fish. But some species of Columnea produce pouchy flowers, too, and people often confuse the two genera with each other. Fortunately, goldfish plant care is about the same for both types, and either can make a genuinely fine kettle of fish!
