West Java athlete secures first swimming gold in Papua Peparnas - ANTARA English

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Elvan Leonardi from West Java bagged the first gold medal in swimming at the Papua National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) XVI held at the Kampung Harapan Aquatic Arena, here on Monday.

Leonardi delivered a spectacular performance as he competed in the men's 100-meter freestyle S8 category, with the fastest time record of 1 minute and 11.60 seconds.

He managed to defeat Riau's representative, Andika, who had to settle for silver, with a time of 1 minute and 25.84 seconds.

Meanwhile, Maluku athlete Nyong Wally stood third, with a time record of 1 minute and 26.60 seconds.

Seven athletes from four provinces took part in the men's 100-meter freestyle S8 event.

South Sumatra sent the most representatives, with three athletes. Meanwhile, Riau sent two athletes, and Maluku as well as West Java sent one athlete each.

Today, the swimming sports branch is scheduled to hold 30 categories for several styles and classification.

In addition to men with the S8 classification, there are also those who compete in the women's S8, men and women's S9, and men and women's S10 within the 100-meter freestyle category.

Men and women S4, S5, and S7 athletes for the 50-meter breast stroke also began competing today.

After the medals ceremony, the competition was continued for the men's S11-S12, women's S11-S12-S13, men's S13, men and women's S14, as well as men and women's S15 100-meter freestyle.

Today's competition will be closed, with athletes competing in the men's S8, women's S8-S9, men's S9, men and women's S10 100-meter freestyle category.

7. Nendi Yefriansyah (South Sumatra) - 1 minute, 55.03 seconds.
