Learn How Amateur Sleuths Are Using Forensic Genealogy To Solve Crimes From Home ON ZOOM

Tuesday, June 23, 7pm

There are currently more than 250,000 unsolved murders in America according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Justice. This startling reality has led to the rise of an online world of amateur sleuthing with everyday Americans trying to solve cold cases from the comfort of their living rooms. Deborah Halber, author of "The Skeleton Crew: How Amateur Sleuths Are Solving America's Coldest Cases," will discuss how these armchair sleuths have evolved from the early days of the Internet to genetic and forensic genealogy, which uses results from DNA tests such as 23andMe and Ancestry.com to identify suspects or victims by tracing their family trees. Deborah Halber started out as a daily newspaper reporter then turned to the dark side to do public relations for Tufts and other universities. As a science writer at MIT, she chronicled everything from quantum weirdness (that's the technical term) to snail slime. Deborah's book, "The Skelton Crew," inspired the Netflix crime drama "Ultraviolet". A member of the National Association of Science Writers and president of New England Science Writers, Deborah also writes about true crime or anything involving moldy dead things. Laughter Circle ON FACEBOOK LIVE

Wednesday, June 24, noon

This program is for all ages. This program combines voluntary laughter exercises with gentle breathing techniques to teach the body how to laugh without relying on jokes or humor. This is a participatory program where we will create moments to laugh in through guided actions. No need to bring a yoga mat--most of the program is seated, with options for standing or gentle movement. What are the benefits of laughter? Mood elevates. Stress, depression and tension decrease. Immunity improves. Lung capacity increases through deep breathing, enhancing oxygen delivery to all parts of the body. Endorphin and serotonin levels rise. Laughter provides an excellent internal massage to digestive tract as well as improving blood supply to the internal organs. People who laugh don't worry as much as people who don't laugh.
