Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo accepting donations of used, broken Christmas string lights - Fox 10 News

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - Do you have broken, non-working, or used string lights following Christmas? You can donate them for a good cause.

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is once again participating in Lights for Lions.

"The funds received from that recycling goes to support the Ruaha Carnivore Project over in Tanzania to help conserve carnivores, lions, leopards, hyenas, and educating the local people about human animal conflicts and how we can mitigate those conflicts," Zoo Director Joel Hamilton said.

But why Christmas lights?

The zoo says most holiday lights are not bio-degradable and are dangerous to animals if they get tangled in them.

"It has a benefit to keeping them out of the landfills. It has a benefit that we're teaching people about recycling and ultimately has a benefit to help animals in the wild," Hamilton said.

And it's an easy process.

"Oh, it's quite simple there's a big bin out in front of the zoo to the left of the main entrance to the zoo people can just bring your lights here drop them off in the bin and we'll do the rest," Hamilton said.

You have until Jan. 31 to donate them. You can donate daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
