What's the best burger in the Triangle? WRAL voters' choose Cowfish - WRAL News

Offering a unique mix of cuisines, The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar specializes in both sushi and burgers to create a vibrant atmosphere complete with decorative pop-art walls and tall fish tanks that also accentuate the fusion experience.

The restaurant took the top slot in the latest WRAL Voters' Choice Awards for Burgers in the Triangle.

The Cowfish is located at 4208 Six Forks Road, Suite 100 in Raleigh. They are open for lunch and dinner Monday through Thursday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, they are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

We caught up with Jennifer Brantley, director of culture + communications, at the restaurant for some more in depth details to the Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar's theme and specialties.

How long has the business in Raleigh been open?

We have been open at North Hills since 2013 and are celebrating 10 years this year.

Tell us about the concept of your restaurant. Do you have any particular themes or specialties? What sets you apart from other restaurants in the city?

The Cowfish concept stemmed from the idea of a union between two different food genres brought together under one roof. We have pushed to excel in each area, focusing on craveable, gourmet burgers and innovative, fresh sushi at the same time. We are allergy friendly and the only restaurant in Raleigh who sells burgushi, which blends sushi and burgers together by using burger components to make sushi. Also of interest: the large aquarium in the center of the restaurant was featured on the show Tanked.

What made you decide to specialize in burgers and sushi?

At the time it was a necessity. We had a burger concept that was struggling with sales, and we were unable to get out of a lease. Altering the concept and adding sushi onto our burger menu was necessary in order to increase sales. We were having success with sushi at our sister restaurant eeZ, in Huntersville, and the decision was made to mash the two food genres together. The result was a really fun and weird concept which was much different from others in the market.

What are some of the top selling burgers on your menu? Are there any other top-selling or interesting items on your menu people should know about?

Our top burger is the build your own; letting our guests design a dish they way they like has always proven to be a large and successful part of our concepts. Our Texas Longhorn is the most popular named burger on the menu followed by the CBCLT. As for interesting menu items, our Cheese Burgushi, Crispy Brussels and Bedrock Blast shake are all quite popular as are our bento boxes with both a mini burger and sushi.

What makes your burger stand apart from others in the region?

Our longtime beef purveyor, Niman Ranch, is humane certified and practices sustainable farming; cattle are never, ever given hormones or antibiotics. Our burgers are large and not for the faint of heart; each is a full half pound.
